On Sportsmanship and Graceful Winners

Pete’s money is on a Bush re-election this year – and not because I blindly follow the man. I don’t even think the election will be as close as it was in 2000. I have this feeling that Bush will clearly and decisively win – not by a landslide, but decisively. There is the possibility of a battleground state or two slipping into litigation woes, but if the overall count is not close, it will be harder to justify litigation.

That being said, I happen to know a few people who are really hung up on the “anyone but Bush” scenario. On Nov 3, I am afraid folks like Cher, Babs and Rosie O’Donnel are going to go into deep, dark depression and excessive misery. They are so entirely wrapped up in their own ivory towers, that anything other than a Kerry landslide this year will absolutely astonish them to their very core.

But – a win by Bush is not a reason to gloat or pour salt in the wounds of liberals. In the end, my liberal friendships are much more important to me than the ability to do a victory dance because my team won. The Bush election in 2000 and the following decisive Republican victories in the legislature, and then the toppling of Grey Davis were all reasons to cheer for me, but I know those things upset and hurt some good friends of mine who are equally passionate in their liberal stance.

The election game is a good and just one. It takes passion and dedication to win at it. There’s going to be a lot of pent up anger over this race either way, so the best thing the winners can do is to compete and win gracefully. Be happy and thankful that your candidate won the race, but immediately begin reaching out to the other side to make sure that friendships don’t become bitter rivalries.

In the end, your friends mean so much more than a few moments of giddy excitement at their expense.

As my friend Barbara frequently states: “Reel it in!”
